Billing and plans, answered
Do I need an invitation to sign up?
No. Anyone can create an account, and the free plan needs no payment details. The product is in open beta, which describes how finished it is, not who is allowed in.
Is it free to start?
Yes. Every account starts on the Free plan with daily allowances for play turns, character generation, coaching drills, and Scry forecasts, and it does not expire. Paid plans raise those allowances and add images, audio, deeper coaching, and stronger models. The guided learn-to-play one-shot is included on every plan, the free one too, and it uses the same daily play allowance as any other adventure rather than a separate one.
Does The Dungeon Trainer replace a human Dungeon Master?
No. A human Dungeon Master can run a full campaign using the platform's campaign, character, dice, initiative, messaging, and organization tools. AI assistance and autonomous AI-led play are separate options the table can choose.
Is multiplayer an extra?
No. Hosting a shared table and joining one are included on every plan, the free one too. The plan you are on sets your allowances and how many campaigns you can keep, not whether you can play with friends.
Do I have to use the AI at all?
No. You can run the game yourself and use the app as a virtual table: dice rolled in code, character sheets, hit points, conditions, XP, combat rounds, and one shared transcript. Those actions make no model call, so they draw no allowance and cost no credits, and AI roles at your table are ones you add on purpose.
When do daily allowances reset?
Daily allowances (play turns, Scry forecasts, coaching drills, and each campaign's shared AI-turn budget) reset every UTC day.
How do credits work?
Credits are overflow, never the first resort: an action draws on your plan's daily allowance first and spends credits only after it runs out. Standard includes 100 credits per month and Premium 300, on top of the daily allowances, and you can buy credit packs any time. Credits currently do not expire.
How are shared campaigns with an AI DM funded?
A campaign the AI runs has its own daily AI-turn budget funded by the host. Players taking turns there draw on that campaign budget rather than their personal daily caps, and overflow beyond the budget spends the host's credits.
What happens when I upgrade?
An upgrade applies immediately, and your billing is prorated by our payment provider.
What happens when I downgrade?
A downgrade is scheduled to the end of your current billing period; you keep your current plan until then. Existing campaigns over the lower plan's limit are kept and stay fully usable, but you cannot create new campaigns until you are back under the new limit.
What happens when I cancel?
Cancellation takes effect at the end of your billing period: you keep the access you paid for until then, and your account then moves to the Free plan. You can cancel from your Account settings.
Can I get a refund?
Cancelling and refunding are two different things. Cancelling stops future renewals and is self-serve in Account settings. A refund returns money already charged, is not automatic, and is requested by emailing us. We will consider refunding your first payment if you write within 7 days of that charge. Renewals are not refundable, so cancel before the renewal date if you do not want the next period. A credit pack is refundable only while you have spent none of it. Can I bring my own AI provider key?
Yes. You can add your own Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google API key in your account settings; supported text generation then runs on your key. Keys are stored encrypted and used only to make model calls for you. Some features, such as image generation, still use the platform's providers.
Can I use a local model?
Yes. You can point your account at an Ollama-compatible endpoint and supported text generation routes there. The endpoint must be reachable from our servers over the public internet.
Do prices include tax?
Purchases are processed by our payment provider as the merchant of record, which collects and remits any applicable sales tax, VAT, or GST for your location.
